Why did my trade close at a different price than I expected?
Updated last month

If you notice that your trade opened or closed at a price that does not match what you saw on the chart, it is most likely because buy and sell orders use different prices — and the chart by default only shows one of them.

Buy orders use the ask price, sell orders use the bid price

When you open a buy trade, it executes at the ask price — which is slightly higher than the bid. When you open a sell trade, it executes at the bid price. The same applies when closing: closing a buy trade executes at the bid, and closing a sell trade executes at the ask.

Why does this look confusing on the chart

By default, MT4 and MT5 charts only display the bid price in the candlestick history. This means that if you opened a buy trade, your entry price (which was the ask) will appear slightly above the visible chart line. This is not an error — it simply reflects the spread between the two prices at the time of execution.

For example, if the bid price is 1.2500 and the spread is 2 pips, the ask price will be 1.2502. If you open a buy trade, your entry will show as 1.2502 — even though the chart line at that moment shows 1.2500. The difference is the spread, not an execution error.

How to verify your actual execution price

The most effective way to resolve this confusion is to add the ask price line directly to your chart. Once enabled, you will be able to see both the bid and ask prices in real time, so your buy order entries and exits will align with what is visible on screen.

Follow the steps below for your platform to enable the ask line now.

Desktop — MT4

  1. Right-click anywhere on the chart

  2. Select Properties, then go to the Common tab

  3. Tick Show Ask Line and click OK

WebTrader — MT4

  1. Select Charts from the top menu, then Properties (or press F8)

  2. Go to the Common tab and tick Show Ask Line

Mobile (iOS) — MT4

  1. Tap Settings in the bottom-right corner

  2. Select Charts and toggle on Ask Price Line

Mobile (Android) — MT4

  1. Tap Settings in the bottom-left corner

  2. Select Charts and tick Ask Price Line

Tip: The ask line appears in red by default. If you cannot see it after enabling it, it may be blending into your chart background. To fix this, go to Properties > Colors tab and change the Ask Price Line colour to something clearly visible against your chart.

Once the ask line is visible, you should be able to see exactly where your buy orders opened and closed. If your entry or exit price still does not make sense after enabling the ask line, please contact the Axi support team who will be happy to review your trade history with you.
